Omaha, NE - A sad development in the story of a baby girl who was given a second chance at life by a total stranger. 18-month old Ava Cowell has died after receiving a new liver at the Lied Transplant Center in Omaha.
Cowell's family lives in Minnesota. They came to Omaha for Ava's surgery and recovery. Her mom says Ava suffered a stroke over the weekend and died.
Life was looking up for Ava just a few days ago. A stranger named Sara Kaiser read about her birth defect in a Minnesota newspaper. She came to Omaha to donate part of her liver to help Ava get better.
Doctors told Ava's family they do not think the transplant caused the stroke. They are performing an autopsy to find some answers.
