What is Fatty Liver?
Fatty liver is the collection of excessive amounts of triglycerides as a single large droplet or multiple
small droplets and other fats inside liver cells resulting in a yellow-colored liver. Fatty liver is also
known as steatosis.
The symptoms of Fatty Liver
Clinical features of fatty liver vary with the degree of lipid infiltration, and often, there are no
symptoms associated with fatty liver. If there are symptoms, they can include pain (with massive or
rapid infiltration) under the rib cage on the right side of the body, swelling of the abdomen, jaundice,
and fever (all with hepatic necrosis or biliary stasis). Symptoms that occur less often in alcoholic fatty
liver, but more often in pregnancy related fatty liver, are nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and
abdominal pain.
Types of Fatty Liver
It can be classified into 7 types.
1. Obesity fatty liver
2. Alcoholic Fatty Liver
3. Malnutrition fatty liver
4. Diabetic Fatty Liver
5. Fatty Liver of pregnancy
6. drug Fatty Liver
7. Fatty Liver caused by diseases
Causes of Fatty Liver
The most common cause of fatty liver in Europe is alcoholism. In alcoholic fatty liver, over
consumption of alcohol changes the way that the liver breaks down and stores fats. (Fatty liver can
occur in people who consume as little as 10 oz of alcohol per week.)Often, people with chronic
alcoholism also suffer from malnutrition by eating irregularly and not consuming a balanced diet.
Other causes include malnutrition (especially protein deficiency), obesity, diabetes mellitus, Cushing’s
syndrome, Reye’s syndrome, pregnancy, large doses of hepatotoxins such as I.V. tetracycline, carbon
tetrachloride intoxication, prolonged parenteral nutrition, and DDT poisoning.
Whatever the cause, fatty infiltration of the liver probably results from mobilization of fatty acids from
adipose tissues or altered fat metabolism.
Diagnosis of Fatty Liver
A liver biopsy confirms excessive fat in the liver.: Blood tests may be used to determine if the liver is
functioning properly . These liver function tests support this diagnosis
The elevation of Globulin, Cholesterol, Total Bilirubin, Alkaline Phosphatase
The somewhat low of Albumin
usually low (less than 300 U) of Transaminase
possibly prolonged of Prothrombin time
Other findings may include anemia, leukocytosis, elevated white blood cell count, albuminuria, hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia, and iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12 deficiencies.
Treatment of Fatty Liver
In fatty liver caused by alcoholism, the treatment is to give up drinking alcohol and to eat a healthy,
well balanced diet. In fatty liver associated with pregnancy, the recommended treatment is to deliver the
baby. When fatty liver results from parenteral nutrition, decreasing the rate of carbohydrate infusion
may correct the diseaseVitamin and mineral supplements along with nutritional support may be useful.
It is also effective to lose weight to a normal standard if a patient has Obesity fatty liver.
The prevention of Fatty Liver
Prevention consists of maintaining a well balanced diet and healthy lifestyle with moderate or no
alcohol consumption. Pregnant women require good prenatal care so that symptoms can be recognized
and treated as early as possible. To prevent Reye's syndrome, children should not be given aspirin to
treat symptoms of the flu or other viruses.
